In ancient times, thanks to his nose and his willingness to stand in the water, the bum was used in duck hunting as a retriever in water: its French name "caniche" in fact derives from "canard" (which means " duck ") or chien canne (cane dog), in German (" pudel ") and English (" poodle "), the name comes from German's arcaican" pudeln "which literally means" jump in the water. "
The Poodle is now in IX FCI group of the classification, companion dogs.
Origin of the breed there are several disputes, the two theories, however, bring back the most reliable source of bum either France or Germany. According to the French race descend from a water dog named "Barbet", according to the supporters of German descent, however, the same could Barbet descended from a race of Asian origin arrived in Europe thanks to the contact of the Goths and Ostrogoths with Eastern populations, or may have been raised by the Berbers in North Africa to find your way through the European Portugal.
Originally the bum was an animal doomed to danger and adventure. Its use in duck hunting and as a retriever in the water was so widespread that his grooming today (which many lead back to extravagant aesthetic) was designed specifically to facilitate its work in water: mowing the hair in the back body needed to leave more freedom in swimming with the hind limbs, while the hair was allowed to grow abundantly in the front to ensure coverage from the cold and wind to the most important organs such as the lungs and heart and to protect the body from scratches of plant. The tuft on the tail, finally, it was necessary to allow the master to follow him with his eyes when he immersed himself in the marshes or when he went in the dense thicket: in the absence of hair in the back, in fact, it was not easy to distinguish the skin from the bushes and undergrowth, and was easy to follow the undulating movement of the colored tuft on the top of the queue which was often tied a colored ribbon to help even more the eye.
In contrast to many other breeds the different sizes of the homeless are canonized for centuries, although according to the American Kennel Club the oldest size would be great. The poodle can occur in four different sizes:
• Standard, ranging from 45 to 58 cm at the withers;
• Medium, between 35 and 45 cm at the withers;
• Dwarf, ranging from 28 to 35 cm at the withers;
• Toy, ranging from 24 to 28 cm at the withers.
The ideal weight is around 22 kg for the large size, 12 kg for the average 7 kg for size dwarf and under 4 Kg size toy.
